“Declaration for Sustainable” Seoul National University

Seoul National University has been committed to producing world class leaders and has been contributing to the future if mankind by actively responding to issuesat a global level, Sustainable development is becoming a new paradigm which intends to integrate the environment, economy and society altogether. In order to materialize sustainable development, all members of society, and all humankind should bring together their wisdom and strength. Likewise, universities as higher educational institutions and professional research institutions have the social responsibility to present and realize a new vision for sustainable development.

Seoul National University will make every effort to cultivate member’s values as well as attitudes so they correspond to sustainable development. Seoul National University will also strengthen capability for research. To materialize a sustainable and environment-friendly campus, we will follow principles as below:

We will connect and integrate diverse fields of academia and disciplines, for education, research and social activities which will realize sustainability.
We will create an environment-friendly campus culture based on active participation of the members of the university.
We will expand cooperation between the local community and the regional community and build a global network for sustainable development.
We will equip ourselves with an administrative system and build a creative operation system.

Goals

Research, Education, and Practice for Sustainable Development
- Promote collaborative research, education, and practice for sustainable development.
- Encourage research for expanding reproductive energy and research and development for new generation energy
- Establish the Asian Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability
Cooperation with the Local and Global Community
- Found the Kwanak Mountain Conservancy and actively participate in revitalizing the Dorim stream
- Build a healthy network between campus and the local neighborhood.
- Promote an open training program for a sustainable local community.
- Participate in global activities for a sustainable society
Campus Environment Management in Response to Climate Change
- Reduce CO₂ emissions by 50% of current levels by 2030
- Double CO₂ absorption of current levels by 2030
- Increase self- sufficiency if water to 80% by 2020
- Reduce waste production by 50% of current levels by 2020
4. Creating a Sustainable Campus
- Formulate a master plan for a Sustainable Campus
- Prepare guidelines for efficient energy usage and environmental-friendly design
- Nurture ecological culture on campus
Management and Operation for Sustainable Development
- Create an organization responsible for building a sustainable and environment-friendly campus
- Practice transparent and moral sustainable management
- Publish Sustainability Report to evaluate and environmental-friendly campus
